Printing Portland- A Portland Tradition

Printing Portland- The holidays brings the family together by tradition. Portland is the same way. Tradition brings the community together by partaking in yearly events.

Portland loves doing events that brings together the community throughout the year, especially around the holidays. So, what is considered a Portland tradition? Well, there are many.

Zoolights

The Oregon Zoo gets heavily involved with the holiday spirit by having the zoo opened every day from the end of November until January 2 (besides Christmas Eve and Christmas). The Zoo lights up the entire place with a Christmas tree and all. The Zoo turns into a winter wonderland during this time of year with millions of lights, decorations, and illuminated animals playing throughout the zoo. Some of the nightly events and entertainment includes performances by local musicians, dancers, and a ride on Santa’s sleigh (train). The children absolutely love the train ride! Zoolights is for the entire family and friends to come and enjoy.

Christmas on the Water

Christmas Ships has been a tradition since 1954 in Portland, Oregon. What is it? There are over 60 boats that parade along the Columbia and Willamette River for 15 nights of excitement, entertainment, and light shows. The parade involves various fleets, and this year there has been 15 more boats involved, so be sure to check out more light displays. The Christmas Ships Parade is a great event during the evening to come out with your family and friends to view moving lights on the river! If you have a Twitter, be sure to hashtag #ColumbiaFleet or #WillametteFleet for Christmas Ships!

Grotto Christmas Lights

The Grotto is holding the annual Christmas Festival of Lights that runs now through December 30. The nightly hours start from 5 PM and the grounds close by 10 PM. Visitors who come to the festival are encouraged to bring a canned food good to benefit Sno-Cap that is the east country’s affiliate of the Oregon Food Bank. For all, Christmas is all about giving to others!

The Nutcracker

The Nutcracker has been a Christmas tradition for decades all over the United States. The Oregon Ballet Theatre puts on a great show from December 12 through December 26 at the Keller Auditorium. The program features the OBT orchestra during select performances. As for the showing, it tells the story about being swept away by snowflakes to a magical place faraway. The Sugarplum Fairy makes an appearance throughout the show and makes a trip to the “Land of Sweets”. This show you won’t want to miss. Bring the children out for an entertaining performance with beautiful music by the Oregon Ballet Theatre Orchestra.
